The maternal mortality rate in the United States exceeds the rate in other high-income countries. Preeclampsia is the leading cause of maternal and neonatal mortality worldwide, highlighting a need for better detection methods. Here we review  the potential of angiogenic biomarkers in earlier diagnosis of preeclampsia to  ultimately drive improved outcomes.
